Sunday Brunch with Cecile at Zazil Cocina Mexicana

Cecile and I had Sunday Brunch at Zazil Cocina Mexicana. Nestled in Santana Row, Zazil offers a warm tropical ambiance and beautifully presented plates celebrating traditional dishes from across Mexico.

We shared Omelette de Rajas Poblanas—roasted poblano chiles onions, and creamy black bean sauce topped with queso fresco, grilled jalapeños, and enchiladas. We also shared the Enchiladas Mañaneras—scrambled eggs with tomatoes, jalapeños, chicken, and a touch of fruity mole, served with crema fresca, black beans, and warm corn tortillas.

The name Zazil, meaning Clear, Light, Clarity in Yucatec Maya, reflects its cultural roots and connection to nature. As we left, we admired their colorful Día de los Muertos altar—a beautiful tribute to tradition and remembrance of friends and family members who have passed on which is celebrated on Nov 1-2.

Dinner with Friends at the Newly Opened El Comal Exquisite Mexican Cuisine in Los Altos

by Dennis Augustine

Cecile and I enjoyed a delicious dinner with Sarah and Bill Rothenberg at El Comal Mexican Cuisine in downtown Los Altos—a first visit for all of us.

Born from the vision of two longtime amigos (and former contractors), El Comal—which means “the griddle” in Spanish—brings the vibrant culinary traditions of Oaxaca and Yucatán to the table. Since opening earlier this year, it’s already become known as a warm, inviting spot where modern design meets deeply rooted Mexican flavors.

Afterward, we strolled over to The Penny Creamery, where Bill treated us to ice cream cones—a sweet ending to a wonderful evening of food, friendship, and laughter.

From Protégé to Colleague to Lifelong Friend — Celebrating Doug Robinson at 65

by Dennis Augustine

Last evening, Cecile and I were delighted to be among honored guests invited by Doug and his lovely wife, Kellye, to celebrate his milestone 65th birthday dinner at Locanda Sorrento Restaurant in Campbell.

The loving gathering included close friends, family, staff, and longtime associates. From antipasto to dessert—Limoncello sorbet and cake—the food was outrageously good. One of the staff, Ernesto, from Napoli, led us all in singing “Volare.” The Italian verb means to fly, but culturally the song—“Nel blu dipinto di blu,” commonly known as “Volare”—evokes joy and freedom, traits that Doug embodies both personally and professionally.

Doug and I first met back in the ’80s, when my longtime friend (and his cousin) Larry Blitz referred him to me. At the time, Doug was a college student considering dentistry. After visiting my office, observing surgeries, and meeting patients, he decided to pursue podiatry instead. Since then, our professional and personal connection has become almost “incestuous” in the best sense—we’ve cared for each other’s family members and I shared countless patient referrals over the decades, and continue to do so.

After we sang “Happy Birthday” to Doug—, led by Ernesto—Doug went around the room, expressing heartfelt gratitude to each of us. Though not Italian by heritage, he sure hugs like one! Having visited Italy to see my relatives in my youth and middle years, I now officially proclaim him an honorary Italian:)

“Cent’anni Doug— may you live a hundred years filled with health, laughter, and love.”

Note: Sharing with family in the states and Italy/Sicily

Santana Row is More than Just a Meal: Art, Fountains & Flair

Cecile and I enjoyed a relaxed lunch today at "The Counter" on the outdoor terrace at Santana Row. For those who don’t know, Santana Row gets its name from Frank M. Santana, a San Jose civic leader, and it’s become a one-of-a-kind destination blending dining, art, and boutique shopping.

We shared a classic cheeseburger with a side of coleslaw—simple, fresh, and done right. Our waiter, is from Colombia, added a warm and welcoming touch to the experience.

What makes Santana Row special is the atmosphere: exotic plant vases, colorful murals, whimsical signs, flowing fountains, and striking sculptures everywhere you look. It’s not just lunch—it’s a little escape that makes you feel that your in a European village.

Then there's the Augustine Cafe, we have yet to try. Oh well, there's always next time.

From our Son Jason's Dog Daisy to the Vatican: A Shared Love for Animals

by Dennis Augustine

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”

— Anatole France

Several years ago, Reverend Channing Smith invited me to the Blessing of the Animals service at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Saratoga. I went with Jason’s dog, Daisy, a sweet Chihuahua–Italian Greyhound mix, who later appeared in the Los Gatos Times Weekly and Saratoga News.

Outside the church, I ran into former mayor Ann Waltonsmith and her husband Rick, who brought their gentle donkeys, Betsy and Ike, along with Adrienne Jacques, founder of Kitten Cattitude Rescue. It was amazing how peaceful Daisy was among all the animals — a joyful gathering that honors St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals.

This week, Pope Leo XIV was gifted a magnificent white Arabian horse named Proton by a Polish breeder who said he wanted a horse “worthy of the Pope” — white to match his cassock. The horse’s lineage even traces to Jordanian royalty and the United States.

And in Brazil, Father João Paulo Araujo Gomes continues his inspiring mission of rescuing and rehoming abandoned dogs. During Sunday Mass, he often brings a rescue dog to the altar — giving each one a moment of grace and a chance to find a loving home. His story was featured in Netflix’s Dogs episode, “The Protectors.”

Three stories, one spirit — compassion in action and love that embraces every living creature.May we all live with hearts as open as theirs.

Greek Hospitality at Barbayani Taverna & a Bit of Halloween Fun

Dinner at Barbayani Taverna in downtown Los Altos felt like a mini getaway to the Greek islands! The calming decor, perfect acoustics, and outstanding food made the evening unforgettable.

We shared Saganaki—pan-fried Kefalograviera cheese flambéed with brandy and lemon—before enjoying Moussaka, Lamb Chops, Pork Chops, and Scallops. The chef surprised us with a complimentary Galaktoboureko, a warm custard pie wrapped in crisp phyllo and drizzled with citrus syrup. Absolutely heavenly!

for Barbayani… and to Susie’s son Ronny for the great recommendation!

After dinner, we stepped outside and found ourselves in the middle of a Witches & Warlocks Wine Stroll—complete with music, laughter, and Cecile snapping a photo of me with one of the witches at a face-painting booth.

That spirit of Greek warmth and joy made the evening feel truly special.

From Maui to the Golden Gate — Happy Birthday, Kyle!

Happy Birthday to our awesome son-in-law Kyle — devoted husband to Michelle, super dad to Lyla, Emmy, and Gus, and lately the family’s go-to chef!

Cecile, Jason, and I love when they join us in Maui before Christmas — sunshine, laughter, and great memories every year.

He’s also my biking buddy, keeping pace with me and friends Bill Rothenberg, Jimi, and Jennifer Hunter on rides (yes, even through San Francisco hills and crossing the Golden Gate Bridge).

Here’s to you, Kyle — keep pedaling, cooking, and loving life to the fullest!

Italian American Heritage Month — A Walk Through Memory Lane

by Dennis Augustine

When I think of Italian American Heritage Month, I remember Cecile and I touring Little Italy in New York City with our dear friends Nelson and Susan Bye in October 2023 — part of our Hudson Valley River Cruise with American Cruise Lines.

It was the 50th Anniversary of Caffè Palermo, home of “Baby John the Cannoli King,” where we enjoyed his pizza, cannoli, and tiramisu on Mulberry Street — the heart of Italian pride and tradition.

The visit was deeply nostalgic for me. I grew up just across the Hudson in Hoboken, NJ — where my mother, Maria, arrived as an immigrant from Italy in 1947, carrying the hopes and flavors of the old country.

Celebrating Kim’s birthday at Opelia Restaurant on Main Street in Los Gatos

by Dennis Augustine

Cecile and I were happy to have Kim and Al join us for this special occasion. Opelia, with its “Turkish Mediterranean feel,” created an intimate and romantic atmosphere in our cozy booth. Unlike some bustling restaurants, the excellent acoustics allowed us to converse clearly without being drowned out by neighboring tables. The staff and ambiance contributed to a calm yet celebratory mood, infusing it with warmth.

Opelia’s cuisine is a delightful fusion of Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean-Anatolian flavors. We commenced our culinary journey with refreshing cocktails, a glass of cabernet wine, and a Meze Combo platter. This platter featured six delectable cold appetizers with warm, fresh pita bread provided the perfect accompaniment for dipping.

Cecile and I shared the Opelia Salad, a harmonious blend of butter lettuce, figs, apples, goat cheese, pumpkin seeds, beets, and pomegranate molasses. Al opted for the Mediterranean sea bass filet, accompanied by seasonal vegetables, olive oil, and fresh lemon. Kim chose the Chicken, herbs, bell pepper paste, toasted marash sauce, and arugula. She later commented the food was to die for.

To conclude our meal on a sweet note, our waitress presented us with complimentary birthday desserts to share. We indulged in Ekmek Kadayifi, a traditional Anatolian bread pudding filled with mascarpone sabayon, and Diyarbakir Burma with Walnut, a delightful pastry with crispy layers and a filling of crushed walnuts.

Annual Birthday Lunch with My Protégé — and Longtime Friend — Dr. Douglas Robinson

by Dennis Augustine

Every year around this time, Doug sends me a thoughtful text, inviting me to celebrate my birthday with a luncheon. It all began when I founded the Park Avenue Foot Clinic in the 1970s, and Doug was just a college student in his early twenties.

Back then, I had an open-door policy for him to visit my office, allowing him to observe my patient care and practice management. He eventually transitioned from orthodontics to becoming a board-certified Podiatric physician and Foot and Ankle Surgeon. Today, he stands among the best in his field.

This year, we celebrated my birthday at MO’s, a restaurant next to where Opa’s Greek restaurant once stood in historic downtown Campbell. We both enjoyed their taco salad while catching up. Over the years, I’ve referred countless patients to him, including family members and friends.

I’m incredibly proud of Doug’s accomplishments, including building a successful practice on his own. His credentials and kindness are unmatched. I’m also grateful for the enduring mentor-protégé relationship and the lifelong friendship we share.

A Glorious Hibiscus Bloom Amidst Shopping & A Shared Indulgence for Lunch

by Dennis Augustine

Cecile and I enjoyed a picture-perfect afternoon at the fabulous Stanford Shopping Mall, where the idyllic 72-degree breeze made strolling a delight. A little shopping, a little people-watching, and then lunch at The Melt—our shared guilty pleasure of a golden grilled 3-cheese sandwich, paired with a crisp Cobb salad and a pickle.

What always captures me most about this open-air gem is the professionally tended botanic displays that bring bursts of color to every walkway. Among them all, the large pink hibiscus blooms stood out like radiant jewels—catching the eye of shoppers, diners, and visitors alike.

The hibiscus carries a beautiful symbolism:

In Hawaii, it embodies joy, welcome, and the aloha spirit.

In China, it speaks of honor and personal glory.

In India, it symbolizes strength, divinity, and sacred energy.

Everywhere, it whispers of fleeting beauty and love’s radiant bloom.

For me, on this gentle breezy day, they were more than flowers—they were reminders to slow down, breathe in the moment, and savor life’s vivid colors, just as I did walking hand-in-hand with Cecile.

Birthdays Taste Better with Friends, Cake, and a View of the Valley

by Dennis Augustine

We celebrated my birthday three days early on the terrace at La Rinconada Country Club, where the hills spilled into the Santa Clara Valley and the warmth of the day softened into a cool evening. Cecile was at my side, and dear friends Kim and Al Chien hosted with generosity and grace, surprising me with a thoughtful gift and a heartfelt card that touched me deeply.

We lifted glasses of sparkling vodka grapefruit cocktails and Rombauer Chardonnay, spoke of our grandchildren and of cruise voyages soon to come—Europe for them, the Mississippi for us. Dinner was hearty and elegant, with steak, Colorado lamb chops, and Chinese Chicken Salad.

The night ended in sweetness, with a decadent chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream, and as voices rose in “Happy Birthday,” I felt the gift of life itself: love, laughter, and the blessing of another year.

Rolling Through Nature, Boating Activities, Train Rides & Neighborhoods: Endorsed by my Cartoon Double

by Dennis Augustine

“The journey is best measured in moments, not miles.”

My cartoon alter ego joined me for a solo 21–mile bike ride along the Los Gatos Creek Trail — past Vasona Station, Vasona Lake County Park, Oak Meadow Park, and into the winding neighborhoods of Los Gatos and Saratoga.

A ride full of trees, creeks, wildlife, a reservoir lake, the Billy Jones Wildcat Railway, summer boat activities, and calm streets… plus a little imagination to keep me company.

Pride Parade in Silicon Valley: A Fun Celebration for Everyone

by Dennis Augustine

Downtown San Jose came alive Sunday with the 2025 Silicon Valley Pride Parade in its’ 50th year—a joyful celebration of kindness, and belonging for everyone.

I usually bike to all types of celebratory events San Jose offers (i.e. 4th of July and car shows) with my friend Bill, but with him recovering from a shoulder injury, I rode solo this time.

The lineup was impressive—SJPD & SJFD, hospitals, high-tech companies, Nordstrom, churches, AAA, universities, museums, libraries, and community leaders like Mayor Matt Mahan who was interacting with the children and former Mayor Sam Liccardo, now our U.S. Representative.

Sam, a well-known cyclist, had promised to ride “as a straight guy” and invite the community to join him. True to his word, he rolled through on his rainbow-decorated bike in khaki shorts, rainbow sash—posing for photos, shouting “Happy Pride Day!” and spreading joy.

Vendors and volunteers kept the energy high with free shirts, rainbow sunglasses, and fans. A little girl even offered me a flower garland —how could I resist?

Pride reminds us there’s room for everyone when we show up with open hearts. Or as one banner put it: “There is only one race—the human race.”

Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary on National Honey Bee Day, Train Ride & Lunch at Halal Express Middle Easter Cuisine

It was especially fun for Lyla, Emmy, and Gus who were fascinated by the bears, raccoons, bobcats, peacocks, monkeys, shetland ponies, the Queen Bee and the importance of her role in the hive. We all loved exploring together and then hopping on the little train ride around the grounds —a highlight for the kids (and the adults too!).

Afterward, we capped off the outing with a delicious lunch at Halal Express, where we shared plates of flavorful kebobs and falafel wraps and salad, Humus and Pita bread A sweet ending to a day that reminded us just how vital—and magical—bees are to our world

Family Dinner at Ippolito’s Trattoria in Sacramento

by Dennis Augustine

Cecile and I hosted a wonderful family dinner at Ippolito’s in the Rosemont section of Sacramento, CA with our son Jason, our daughter Michelle and her husband Kyle, and our three beautiful grandchildren—Lyla, Emmy, and little August (Gus).

The food was delicious, the company even better, and the evening was made extra special by the beautiful, colorful mural of Venice that set such a vibrant and welcoming backdrop. Moments like these remind us how blessed we are to share good meals and laughter together.

When a White Sox Fan (Zach) with a Heavenly Connection Meets the San Jose Giants

by Dennis Augustine

Before our nephew Zach flew in from Chicago for his week-long visit that recently concluded with a Hawaiian Luau, Cecile and I were brainstorming ideas for a 20-year-old college student’s “must-do” list. My friend Bill, an avid baseball fan, suggested a San Jose Giants game. This was perfect because Zach had been to numerous White Sox games with his dad (Cecile’s brother Mark), but he had always yearned to experience the more intimate atmosphere of a Minor League matchup.

Serendipity struck! Last Tuesday became a “boys night out” for Bill, Zach, and me, while Cecile and Bill’s wife Sarah enjoyed dinner out. Bill managed to secure us 3rd-row seats right behind the catcher at Excite Ballpark for the San Jose Giants vs. the Visalia Rawhide.

We arrived early, hungry, and eager to immerse ourselves in the full ballpark experience. Zach, feasted on BBQ ribs, Bill and I indulged in burgers and a bag of peanuts. The eternal debate of what to do with the peanuts shells ensued:) For dessert Bill had ‘dippin dots’ ice cream and Zach and I had churros. After nine innings, the Giants emerged victorious, shutting out the Rawhide 12-0.

Fun fact: Zach now shares a unique connection with Pope Leo XIV, a fellow Chicagoan and the first American pope. Pope Leo XIV famously wore a White Sox cap during a public appearance at the Vatican. It seems that baseball is indeed a heavenly pastime.

Dinner at Mint Leaf: A Feast of the Senses

by Dennis Augustine

Cecile and I had the pleasure of taking our nephew Zach to Mint Leaf Asian Bistro in Saratoga Village — a gem of Asian-fusion cuisine paired with the most exotic décor with a bohemian vibe.

The moment you step inside, you’re surrounded by rich textures, warm lighting, and intricate Asian artistry. At the far back, high on the wall, a serene golden Buddha overlooks the dining room, casting a calm, watchful presence over every table. From hand-carved wood panels to shimmering silk accents, the space feels like a cross between an upscale lounge and a cultural gallery.

The food? Bold flavors and creative pairings that match the setting perfectly. Mint Leaf isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience, and one of our favorites. Apparently, Zach was quite fond ot it too, calling it his best culinary experience yet.

Famous Felafel, Blooming Rose Garden & and Blast from Our Past

by Dennis Augustine

Cecile and I took our nephew Zach on an adventure to two iconic places in San Jose, each representing the city’s unique charm and flavor.

Our first stop was Falafel’s Drive-In, a beloved family-run gem since 1966. Founded by the late Anton and Zahie Nijmeh, from Jerusalem, this place has become a San Jose institution. The colorful mural adorning the restaurant, created by local artist Lila Gemellos, celebrates the city’s landmarks in vibrant style. Falafel’s gained national recognition when Guy Fieri featured it on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives back in 2007, and the episode continues to air today, serving as a testament to the humble eatery’s enduring popularity.

Next, we strolled through the breathtaking 98 yr old San Jose Municipal Rose Garden established in 1927, which was in full bloom and as timelessly beautiful as ever. To complete our day, we visited my former Foot Clinic on Park Avenue, a place that Cecile and I had successfully built together. It once served as my professional career, later transformed into a law office, and now, a cozy residence. This small piece of personal history holds a special place in our hearts, as it reminds us of the city’s ever-evolving landscape and the places that have shaped our story. Revisiting these locations is always special, and sharing them with family makes the experience even more meaningful.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk Bliss & Wharf Wonders with Zach!

by Dennis Augustine

Continuing our adventures with our nephew Zach, Cecile and I took him to the iconic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk & Wharf—a California classic for over 100 years!

The Boardwalk was bursting with color and energy as usual—vintage rides, arcade games, and the buzz of summer in the air. We strolled the vibrant strip, took in the ocean views, and enjoyed the sunshine—perfect at 74 degrees.

Then it was on to the Wharf, where the vibe completely shifts. No rollercoasters here—just the peaceful pier stretching into the Pacific, lined with restaurants, gift shops, boat tours, and of course… barking sea lions lounging below!
