Honored to Share My Voice for America’s 250th Anniversary

by Dennis Augustine

I'm grateful to have been selected to join fellow Rinconada Hills residents sharing what America means to us as our nation prepares to celebrate its 250th Anniversary.

Here's my contribution to this special community publication:

“E Pluribus Unum” - Out of many, one

America, to me, is both a place and a journey. My wife Cecile and I have been fortunate to travel some of our nation’s great rivers—the Hudson, Mississippi, Columbia, and Snake with friends Nelson and Susie Bye, also residents of Rinconada Hills.

Along their shores, we have experienced the story of America unfolding through historic towns, Civil War battlefields, Revolutionary War sites, Native American heritage, and the enduring spirit of exploration embodied by Lewis and Clark.

These rivers are more than waterways; they are living chapters of our national story. The Mississippi carries the music, culture, and traditions of the American heartland. The Hudson reflects the ideals and struggles of our nation’s founding. The Columbia and Snake Rivers remind us of the frontier spirit, breathtaking landscapes, and the diverse peoples who shaped the West.

Through these journeys, I have come to appreciate that America’s greatest strength lies not in any single place or people, but in the rich tapestry of histories, cultures, and traditions that flow together like the rivers themselves.

Here at Rinconada Hills, I see that same spirit in action. Whether gathering for a Hawaiian Luau, Cinco de Mayo celebration, Hacienda Feast, holiday festivities, or other community events, neighbors from diverse backgrounds come together in friendship and fellowship. These occasions remind us that our differences enrich us and that community is built one relationship at a time.

America means freedom balanced by responsibility, diversity strengthened by unity, and hope sustained through each generation. Like the rivers that connect our nation, we are all part of a larger story still being written.

Happy 250th Birthday, America!
