My friend Bill and I celebrated Independence Day by riding our bikes 18 miles round trip to San Jose’s annual Red, White & Blue Parade & Festival. It was a wonderful way to enjoy the holiday while experiencing the spirit of our community.
The parade was filled with memorable moments—from the colorful Chinese Lion Dance and lively Spanish dancers, to the Boy Scouts of America proudly carrying a giant unfurled American flag that stretched across the street.
We also enjoyed seeing the Vietnamese Miss California pageant representatives, beautifully restored vintage automobiles, local community groups, and families lining the parade route waving flags and cheering.
It was especially nice to see Mayor Matt Mahan celebrating alongside his family, while Congressman Sam Liccardo rode his bicycle through the crowd, greeting parade-goers with smiles and conversation.
What made the day especially meaningful was seeing people from so many cultures and backgrounds coming together under one flag to celebrate our shared love of country. That’s America at its best.
Happy Independence Day!
